Day 2: edge of grid ahead

Headed north where no cell service can be found. Thank you God.

Maybe I should have been more specific

While making our reservations for the first night here in Concord, New Hampshire, I requested a rollaway bed for the girls room. Silly me, I failed to request a room big enough to accommodate it, never mind open and use it. I will be more attentive to detail from here on out.

Nothing but the best for us

Tempting as the lavish amenities seemed here at the Comfort Inn, we elected instead to try a local restaurant. Yeah, it was a tough choice. But, I have a strict no-chains policy when visiting new places.

I wound up with pizza anyway because I couldn’t pass up a pizza made with maple syrup. Yeah, what? Everyone wound up sharing it. It’s a surprisingly tasty idea all agreed we’d try replicating at home.

Another dining temptation: Mexican food in New Hampshire. Yikes. Morbid curiosity may lure us in when our travels bring us back this way later in the week.

Our first stop: Concord, New Hampshire

My four little Texans and I rolled into Concord ahead of schedule tonight. New Hampshire has America’s oldest state house still in active use by its legislature. That factoid drew big yawns from the Monkey Troop. After going through four cycles of elementary school Texas history for them, this trip is my chance to inflict upon my kids the history lessons I received in my younger years. And, I’m just getting started.

Back home where I’ve never been

There is so little of what I remember of Boston. I mean, the landmarks are still here. But, I left when the central artery ran overground, when the Garden was the Gahden, and long before this fancy-pants artsy bridge. And yet, there is something comfortingly familiar to driving north on 93 listening to WBZ for traffic. One thing more needed….

Ahhhhhh. Home again.
