The long haul

I’ve just finished locking down most of the driving for the trip. Assuming I keep to my outline during my time away from the kids, the Expedition will roll across 5,275 miles before it sees its spot in the driveway again. With side-trips and such, it may round up to 5,500 miles.

So, to help you keep track, we will include trip odometer readings with every entry while we’re on the move. I just had the oil changed. Hard to believe the Expedition will be ready for another in the same month. Still, it’s all cheaper than flying everyone.

Zuzu’s test drive

Zuzu's test drive

Just for fun, Zuzu and I climbed aboard a two-seater go-cart for a quick road test. While she enjoyed the experience, I think she prefers the comfort of the Expedition–especially if she can watch a movie.

And then there were two…

Stella’s departure for Camp Misty Meadows is the next-to-last family event prior to our trip west. She wasn’t at all excited about going, but gutted it up… Yeah, right. She Mmedloadin
couldn’t wait to see, groom, and ride horses all week. She was fortunate this time around to sync up with other girls in her troop. Stella’s friends aren’t just at camp, she’s a bunky to Kerry (pictured loading in their stuff… how like a girl to bring a roll-around bag to camp) and the other is in the next cabin. When I left, they were already doing the girly gobble.

Dropping kids at camp is good practice, mom tells me, for dropping them off at college. “Thanks, Dad. Bye, Dad.” and they’re gone. As much noise as the two of them made on the way up, the Expedition was spooky silent on the way home.

Then again, with Kate and Stella gone, I’m only caring for two kids. What a cakewalk!

Step one of our summer adventure: fly Kate west to Camp Grammy. It only LOOKS like she’s waiting for the plane. Fact is, her body was waiting, but her thoughts had been with Grammy nearly two days already.
There is something bittersweet about watching your babies walk down a jetway alone. It was two firsts: the trip she’ll remember as the first, and the first time Daddy watched his princess take wing into the world by herself. The whole thing left me Misty-eyed; it really does go by too fast.

Google’s new map tool

As if Hybrid Satellite-Street views and live traffic data weren’t enough to already make Google Maps the best, they’ve now added a new feature just in time for my trip planning. Google now allows you to edit its routes by clicking and dragging the highlighted path. This customized routing has to be experienced. And, to make that easier, there’s a video explaining how it works. Getting visitors to try new services isn’t an easy putt in the world of webbing. Google conducts a clinic here on how to do it right.
