Intrepid storm riders

Getting through Hurricane Ike was a piece of cake. Getting through a day without electric is another story. How curious to see the kids learn how to cope without their toys… Interesting for dad too. I think it’s time for dad to open a bottle of aged medication…

Bandwidth for breakfast

Well, I’ve tried sending several updates this morning and they’re all cued up in the outbox. It seems the networks are choked with traffic. So, I’m getting this one up via my laptop and wireless card. Here’s where we are…

Storm Damage
The house made it through the night well. No worries there. Of course, we haven’t gotten outside to check things out with regard to the roof, etc.

Electric
We do not have any. We’re just like about 90% of Harris county in that regard. 2.1 million residences are in the dark. There are reports this morning of a transmission line downed up near Conroe. I’m betting it’s not the last one we’ll hear about today.

The kids
John woke up in full teenager mode this morning. (Needs instructions three and four times, does things wth an attitude, etc.) I suspect it’s a lack of computer time that’s doing him in. Kate’s been largely good. Stella and Zuzu are enjoying the adventure.

I’ll log back on to send more word later. Batteries are precious, so I’ll be rationing reports appropriately.

Just nine hours to go…

The lights are coming and going on and off. Reports of nearly a million without power tell me we may well be in the dark soon. Even as I type this via the iPhone, the service has lapsed from electric to battery several times. I am monitoring conditions via the trusty MacBookPro. Sure glad I invested in that robust battery backup for the router and DSL. Despite the chirps, beeps, howls, and whines, the kids haven’t stirred once.

Added bonus: The front door’s copper weather stripping harmonicas a lovely song as particularly strong gusts pass.

Beeps and blow

2:30 in the morning and we are getting pelting rain and heavy wind from the north. As predicted, it is more wind than rain for us. Now and then the lights will flicker causing all the systems in the house to beep in protest. And, through it all, my babies sleep.

Ike’s center crossed over Galveston at 2:10.
