Maine summer swimming: a chilling experience

20110628-070159.jpgWhat a great idea: a quick canoe ride for Stella and Kate. Except, that wind sure is blowing strong across the lake.

20110628-070220.jpgZuzu took a more direct approach, cutting out the boat and jumping in for a swim. She quickly learned this wasn’t the Texas-temp she expected to find.

20110628-070251.jpg Before they could untie the painter, the wind had them at a perfect 45-degree angle from the dock. They decided to abort. Unfortunately, it wasn’t that easy.

20110628-070311.jpgStella took matters into her own hands, jumping in to push the boat where they couldn’t take it with oars alone.

20110628-070328.jpg So, why didn’t Kate jump in to help too? She was content to wait for the dock. She kept telling Stella, “it’s not THAT cold…” But, it really IS that cold. Stella quit a couple times, but wouldn’t leave Kate out there.

20110628-070354.jpg Finally, Kate promised: if you get me back to the dock, I’ll get in the water too. Fair enough, figured Stella.

20110628-070406.jpg Once rescued, Kate inched into the water. No quick dunk like Stella had. So, Zuzu stepped up to “help” Kate with splashes of icy Sebagoness.

Fresh from their aquatic adventures, I’m wondering how the girls will feel about the even chillier Atlantic waters off Cape Cod.

  1. By the time this trip is over, these kids will be beggin’ to come back & see what it’s like here in the dead of winter – that’s what a “refreshing” swim in Maine in the summer will do to you!
    Sounds like you’re havin’ fun.
