The little red stick

The little red stick

Back in the 1800’s they needed a way to make sure peppers were
harvested to a standard. So, Mr. McIlhenny created this fool proof
measurement device; if it matched, the pepper got harvested. They
still use the same sticks today. Moral of the story: keep it simple go
with what works.

Even though only 38 acres of peppers grow here on Avery Island, every
bottle of Tobasco starts in this building. Spicy-good fun ahead.

Zapped lunch

Zapped lunch

We stopped for lunch at a locals kind of place: Southside Bakery.
Yummy burgers for the girls and a shrimp burger for dad. Tasty.
Cookies for the road to Avery Island.

Sweet music

Sweet music

We found this man in the school house telling stories of how he
attended classes in one just like it. Stella was more interested in
the fiddle than the stories.

Job’s tears

The Acadians were a resourceful bunch. Using the seeds of local
plants, they made buttons and jewelry. Kate was so fascinated, I got
her a prayer bracket made here. Ask her to show it to you.
