Portland, Maine

The kids decided they would rather see more of Maine and lighthouse than play at the morning amusement park. So, we’re wandering without a plan in search of the coast and lighthouses. I am thinking drive east till I hit the ocean and turn right. Along the way, we found Portland.

Bagel make-good breakfast

Since the Sebago Lake Lodge had such a lame breakfast buffet, we drove till we found something better. Mister Bagel to the rescue! Mmmm. Yum.

Maine summer swimming: a chilling experience

20110628-070159.jpgWhat a great idea: a quick canoe ride for Stella and Kate. Except, that wind sure is blowing strong across the lake.

20110628-070220.jpgZuzu took a more direct approach, cutting out the boat and jumping in for a swim. She quickly learned this wasn’t the Texas-temp she expected to find.

20110628-070251.jpg Before they could untie the painter, the wind had them at a perfect 45-degree angle from the dock. They decided to abort. Unfortunately, it wasn’t that easy.

20110628-070311.jpgStella took matters into her own hands, jumping in to push the boat where they couldn’t take it with oars alone.

20110628-070328.jpg So, why didn’t Kate jump in to help too? She was content to wait for the dock. She kept telling Stella, “it’s not THAT cold…” But, it really IS that cold. Stella quit a couple times, but wouldn’t leave Kate out there.

20110628-070354.jpg Finally, Kate promised: if you get me back to the dock, I’ll get in the water too. Fair enough, figured Stella.

20110628-070406.jpg Once rescued, Kate inched into the water. No quick dunk like Stella had. So, Zuzu stepped up to “help” Kate with splashes of icy Sebagoness.

Fresh from their aquatic adventures, I’m wondering how the girls will feel about the even chillier Atlantic waters off Cape Cod.

Another day another state

20110628-064855.jpgOur ride on the Mountain Coaster and lunch behind us, the kids settled into road nap mode until the road began weaving through Maine’s lakes region.

20110628-065140.jpg Before long, we arrived at our next destination: Sebago Lake Lodge. Seeing the lake, the canoes, and time on the clock, the girls were anxious to get in the water. What happened next was an experience that makes these trips worth the effort and expense.

Strapping on the Mountain Coaster

20110628-062158.jpgMy little Texans are not easily thrilled by a ride. When I saw the Mountain Coaster while planning the trip, it seemed a perfect fit. Looking up at the ride, they seemed skeptical. Those blue carts get towed to the top of a track that stretches just under a mile. The rest is just a matter of rider and gravity.

20110628-062210.jpgJohn went first, followed by Kate and Stella. Zuzu rode with me. Final review? Ehhhh, it was okay. Fun, but not a thrill. What can I say, the monkey troop sets the bar high.
